The Bible encourages Christians to support the work of the gospel generously:
2 Corinthians 9.6-7 “Whoever sows sparingly will reap sparingly, and whoever shows generously will also reap generously. Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”
1 Tim 6.18-19 “Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.”
We don’t want to be legalist and impose man-made financial demands on people, nor do we want people giving out of compulsion, or reluctantly; but cheerfully because that is what God loves.
Most Church members will agree that they should give generously. Yet some will give out of their financial leftovers to the Lord’s work and think they are being generous. Budget your finances and make a choice to put giving to the Lord as the first priority of your budget.
I do not believe a Christian is required to tithe, that is, give 10% of their income to the church. I believe they should give a minimum of 10%. The tithe is what belongs to God and is giving back recognizing that all we have comes from God. Generous giving is over and above the tithe.
